Song of the Day: '(They Long to Be) Close to You' by Mary Beth Maziarz

Although it isn't as appreciated as it should be, "The Broken Hearts Club" remains one of my all-time favorite gay films. Between Timothy Olyphant's sweet Dennis, hunky Dean Cain's Cole and John Mahoney's mother hen Jack, there was a character gay guys of all ages could relate to. (And wasn't that Zach Braff as the drugged-out party boy?) In addition to the compelling performances and an admirable script, the film's music was just right, from Kym Mazell'es true-to-the-original "Young Hearts Run Free" to Shannon's classic "Let the Music Play." Two of the film's most touching moments are set to classic Carpenters songs, both covered by Mary Beth Maziarz, someone I'd never heard of. Sacrilege as it is to say, her renditions of "We've Only Just Begun" and especially "(They Long to Be) Close to You" give Karen a run for her money, as you will discover yourself below. All these years I thought Maziarz was just another Eva Cassidy (minus the melanoma), a beautiful voice who does great covers. Turns out she's actually an award-winning songwriter, who has released seven albums of her own. Learn more HERE.
