Song of the Day: 'Don't Make Me Over' by Sybil

This Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic has been recorded by many artists I adore, including Petula Clark, Neil Diamond, Connie Francis, Thelma Houston and Dionne Warwick, whose version is considered the definitive. But it was New Jersey-born R&B singer Sybil's new jack swing style take -- which hit No. 20 on the Hot 100 in 1989 -- that I always liked best, even if I never heard from lovely chanteuse again.

She also did an excellent remake of "Walk On By", that had those same great SoulIISoul styled beats.

Oh - I still think Sybil was one of the best singers of her day. She not only did a superlative version of this Bacharach and David song but also a great version of 'Walk on By' and the B-D like 'Make it Easy on Me' courtesy of SAW. Much more poular in the UK than in the USA. She signed on with PWL around 1991 and had a couple of excellent top 10s in the UK - 'When I'm good and ready' and 'The Love I Lost'. If you've never heard her 2001 dance track 'When I fall In Love' (antiloop mix)- i suggest you do it now - great song, great vocal - probably can hear it on youtube.
