Andersonville

Saw Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" yesterday. Found it to be visually thrilling and emotionally heartwarming. I'm an Anderson neophyte -- "Rushmore" is my only other film, which I remember liking -- but it's my understanding that his humor is very polarizing. I totally "got" this one -- it made me smile, it made me laugh and it made me happy. Couldn't see anything not to like. Anyone wanna set me straight?

I loved this movie, too. While it definitely was Anderson at his quirky best, I think it had the right amount of humor, awkwardness, and poignancy, that moment when you realize there is someone out there who feels exactly the way you do. I thought the two kids were terrific, but I thought Bill Murray seemed bored.

Alas, Moonlight Kingdom is in such limited release, not sure I will be able to see it in a theater. The May WSJ Magazine (with Armani on the cover) has a wonderful story about Anderson covering Moonlight as the opening movie at the Cannes Film Festival.

Kenneth, you seem quirky (your breadth of interest in various art forms) enough to me that you would enjoy Anderson's other movies. I loved The Royal Tennenbaum one amazing aspect is that, though it seems like it takes place in NYC, there is not a single reference to any city - all signs erased and all taxis are from the "Gypsy Cab Company".

If you decide to check out The Darjeeling Limited, make sure you get a copy that includes the opening short Hotel Chevalier -- short, brilliant, and a lead into the feature. Hubby and I just recently rerented The Life Aquatic and loved it once again.

Cheers.

You either love or hate Wes Anderson. I think both are entirely legitimate reactions (I'm in the latter camp, and my family hates me for it).

I am zany for Wes Anderson films, with the Royal Tenenbaums my favorite, but I hold The Fantastic Mr Fox to me heart also. I admire them all/

The films always have unusual & fun, especially The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou filled with Bowie covers by Brazilian musician- Seu Jorge.

I am a daily reader of Kenneth in the 212.

I'm a fan of "Rushmore" "Life Aquatic" and "Royal Tenenbaums" - but I think he went to a new level with "Moorise", which was the best movie I've seen so far his year. Visually, it was stunning. Ed Norton and Brice Willis were perfect (though I found Bill Murray a little disappointing). And the kids were all fantastic, with Jared Gilman being spot on perfect.
As wonderful as it is, I have friends who flat out refuse to see it because Wes Anderson's name is attached to it.
