As Times Goes By

Just realizing it was two years ago today that my entire department at The New York Times was told our jobs were being outsourced to nonunion (read: cheaper) editors in Florida. (How time flies.) Not a whole lot has happened since my update on how everyone was doing as of January 2011 -- I think one other designer has gotten a full-time job at a fraction of the pay, and another editor is about to get hired full time by the place where he's been permalancing -- but it is worth noting that Gannett and a few smaller newspaper chains have built upon the example the Times set in setting up "editing centers" in cheaper metropolitan areas, and letting longtime staffers reapply for their jobs or be laid off/bought out. There's been absolutely no turnaround in advertising, so this trend -- and the further decimation of newsrooms -- is something we can sadly expect to continue seeing in the years ahead.
