Maryland Lawmaker Votes No on Marriage Equality, Yes on Stealing to Pay for Her Hetero Wedding

Talk about your unbridled greed. Maryland Delegate Tiffany T. Alston (D-Prince George's), who made headlines last spring when she co-sponsored a bill to legalize same-sex marriage but then changed her mind -- opting instead to champion civil unions and then when that didn't work, voted AGAINST marriage equality -- was charged today with stealing campaign funds to pay for own her Dec. 12, 2010, wedding to Kendal Gray.

The Washington Post reports:

Charges brought by the Office of the Maryland State Prosecutor allege that Del. Tiffany T. Alston (D-Prince George’s) spent thousands of dollars of campaign contributions to pay for wedding expenses and for the salary of an employee in her law firm. In several instances, Alston wrote herself checks from the account of “Friends of Tiffany Alston” and then cashed the checks for personal use, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Sounds like someone wants to have her wedding cake and eat it, too.

Perhaps the blushing bride needed the extra cash to purchase all those Noritake "Xavier Gold" items and the gay-pride fiesta flatware from her Macy's registry that no one bought anything off of -- 'cause nothing says new beginnings and opposite lovin' quite like embezzlement, something these newlyweds seem to know quite a bit about.

EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this post erroneously indicated that Alston had married a woman. The mistake, as you can see, is obviously understandable.
