Royal Watching at Wimbledon

The royal box was filled today for Andy Murray's victory over Richard Gasquet -- I spy a duke, a duchess and a King -- but it was Marion Bartoli's takedown of Serena Williams that had my attention.

When Bartoli served for the match and got broken, I was certain Serena would rebound in the tiebreaker and prevail. But Bartoli held her nerve and stunned the two-time defending champion, who is living proof that age eventually catches up with all of us. (What, you mean I can't not play for a year and still win a Slam?)

Normally, this would be a huge opportunity for Venus Williams, who most certainly would have won way more Slams if not for her sister. But with Venus out most of the year, there's no telling how this could go.

Do you think Serena's age is why she lost? That hadn't crossed my mind at all; I only chalked it up to her being out for 50 weeks due to a series of maladies. I guess her age (29) could also have something to do with it... 4th round is pretty good considering her lack of match play.

Bartoli is no slouch - she just won Eastbourne and is now on a 9 match win streak; she was the Wimbledon runner-up in '07; and, she's coming off a SF showing at Roland Garros just a few weeks ago...
