But truth be told, Michael happened to witness the whole thing (he works around the corner) and says the entire scenario was completely set up -- think Kathy Griffin on Robertson Boulevard -- lest you think the poor boy can't even go shopping in peace on Spring Street ...

This reminds me of the old story of Joan Crawford and the journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. La Crawford was in NYC for a press junket and Kilgallen was following her around. They went to Macy's. There was a crowd of fans, but things were not as exciting as Kilgallen (or her newspaper) would have liked. She expressed this to Crawford, who blithely replied "Follow me!" Joan sailed upstairs into the china dept, the mass of fans following her into the more restricted space. Result: Pandemonium, crashing displays of china and glass, great photo ops, headlines!
Crawford really knew her stuff.
