Rafter Wins Down Under

I'm still having a hard time believing John McEnroe could easily dismiss Wayne Ferreira, a man 14 years his junior. But clearly Mac's Champions Down Under contract did not include a win over local favorite Patrick Rafter, who beat the American 6-2, 6-2. to take home the title. Rafter now travels to London for the year's finale -- the AEGON Masters Tennis tournament at the Royal Albert Hall.

Kenneth, That news of McEnroe beating the much younger Ferreira is not surprising to me. He has beaten similar younger retired players in the past since retiring himself.

Only just a few years ago I saw McEnroe playing Connors and I couldn't believe how well they played. Connors must have been around 50, although he did get out of breath a lot. But the skills, aggression and touch was still there.

Perhaps like McEnroe who along with Borg and Connors, were so far ahead of the other players at the time, that their skills, but not fitness, has carried on long into their retirement.
