Music Box: Lloyd Cole

In case you hadn't noticed, I'm a bit of a binge Lloyd Cole fan. I can go months and months without listening to him, then one of his songs will come on my iPod and I'll go into LC overdrive, listening to nothing else for weeks on end. After years of thinking his work with the Commotions outshined his solo material, I've come to realize how false this is. Sure, "Rattlesnakes" is perhaps the perfect album. But every solo album has had equally bright moments -- "The Negatives" in particular, although "Downtown," "So You'd Like to Save the World," "Late Night, Early Town" or anything on "Etc." -- and all outrank his old band's sophomore and junior efforts. Because Lloyd is so under-the-radar these days, I wanted to get it out there that he has a new album out this month called "Broken Record." I got my copy in the mail today and instantly loved it. Because he's a do-it-yourselfer these days -- the new disc was funded by preorders via his website -- "Broken Record" won't be coming out in America until next year as he can't promote it in Europe and the U.S. simultaneously. But you can order a copy of it now via lloydcole.com, and he'll even sign it for you before he drops it in the mail. Gets yours HERE. He's touring overseas now, but I trust he'll return to New York in 2011. His 2007 show at Joe's Pub was without a doubt one of my favorite NYC shows to date.

I've been in love with Lloyd since the "Rattlesnake" days. Seeing him live at the Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill on the "Mainstream" tour is one of my fondest music memories. Matthew Sweet even played bass in his touring band for that tour. Awesome!
