'Waiter, There's Macaroni in My Pancakes.'

My brother Bill was in town the last couple days, so my strict I-only-eat-at-three-restaurants policy was temporarily put on hold. Momofuku Noodle Bar was pretty fun -- save for the split-pea soft serve dessert. But even better was the famous Shopsin's General Store, where cantankerous chef/philosopher Kenny Shopsin serves up an endless menu of one-of-a-kind dishes -- and will throw you out on your ear if he doesn't like the way you go about ordering and eating it.
Bill and I split an order of sliders (dee-lish!) and macaroni-and-cheese pancakes (surprisingly fun).
By the time my sloppy Joe arrived I was full, but Bill loved his "Egg guacamole." (After being in Greenwich Villages for decades, the place is now located in the Essex Street Market, a completely delightful place that puts the Chelsea Market to shame.) Been meaning to see the documentary about Shopsin's, "I Like Killing Flies," for years, and will definitely get to it sooner than later after Essex Street Market

Does Kenny Shopsin like what he does? "Yeah, yeah, it's a great business. It's not like being an oncologist or some shit like that, you know? There's nothing wrong with it at all. You're never gonna get rich but why would you need to? I don't need to do a bunch of coke to be happy. The day is a nice day every day."

Learn how to make -- and the history of -- mac-and-cheese pancakes!
