Derek Phillips Heats Up 'Friday Night Lights'

As I mentioned recently, I'm busy making up for lost time with my beloved "Friday Night Lights." Over the weekend I polished off Season 3, and watched the first four episodes of the current season (this past Friday's episode is on my DVR, so I will be officially current come Friday). Season 3 -- the show's first since becoming a joint operation with DirecTV -- was truly outstanding. And with Derek Phillips, who plays Tim Riggins' brother Billy, parading around in his skimpy briefs all the time, it has me wondering why I waited a year and half to join the fun. (With Taylor Riggs playing your brother, Derek, you'll have to forgive me for not noticing you right away.) While I've never seen a body like this on a white-trash dude who drinks beer for a living, thank god for the magic of television. This year he's stripping down to his undies again -- to pee in the kitchen sink, no less -- which I must confess has been one of higher notes of the year so far since the show has shed many of its original kids (unlike "90210," these kids don't stay in high school for nine years) and has taken on a more serious racial-tensions story line. (The other glimmer of hope lies within Coach's new assistant, who was spotted in a gay bar by Julie Taylor who was there accompanying a lesbian classmate of hers.) There are still nine episodes to go, so I haven't lost faith that the brilliant writers behind the series don't have it in them for a second-half comeback.
As I was compiling this post, naturally I discovered that SquareHippies had beaten me to the punch. Dirty Great minds really do think alike ...

Agree with you. FNL has maintained great storylines and acting despite the loss of some major characters. This is the best show on television yet no one seems to watch it.

Amazing show! I've been a faithful fan since its television inception and my only complaint is the abbreviated season. Zach Gifford's (Matt Saracen) performance on Friday was outstanding. On another note - Derek Phillips is my guilty pleasure.
