The Tired Old Queen says: Legendary director Howard Hawks teamed up two Hollywood icons, John Wayne and Montgomery Clift, for "Red River," his classic Western saga of the first cattle drive from Texas to Missouri on the Old Chisholm Trail. Along with Joanne Dru and John Ireland, he cast veteran character actors Walter Brennan, Harry Carey and Noah Beery Jr., in a Western that set the standard of the genre for decades to come. Wayne and his surrogate son, Clift, battle storms, stampedes, marauding Indians and each other, in order to get their cattle to the railroad two thousand miles away. Filmed on location, the film is also a metaphor for the changing face of Hollywood, the old style of screen acting recognizing and making way for the Method, which would influence film making right up to present. Filled with high suspense, thundering action and Hawks trademark over lapping dialogue, "Red River" is adventure movie making at its best. Even non-Western lovers will love it.
