You Spin Me Right Round

So I hear today is Record Store Day. (Seriously.) Nobody loved records more than I did back in the day. But with digital music slowly turning the compact disc into a relic from the past, is bringing vinyl back really the music business' master plan for profitability? Sounds ridiculous to me. But according to the latest Nielsen SoundScan figures, vinyl sales rose 89% in the last year. In just the first few months of 2010, SoundScan has tracked the most vinyl sales since the company began accurate tallies nearly 20 years ago. While this is likely the cause of an annoying hipster trend, I'm all for anything that keeps record stores in business as I still get a kick out of flipping through the stacks to see albums that I already own. (Why do I always do that?) So if today is Record Store Day, then I say: Happy Record Store Day!

Yes, vinyl seems to be making a comeback in a big way. It's as if every new release is also available on vinyl now. I've noticed this in the traditional record stores (the dungy, dirty, hole in wall stores) as well as places like Best Buy.
Also, when an act appears on a late night show (Leno, Fallon, etc) the host holds up the big, beautiful vinyl record sleeve instead of the usual CD cover.

BTW, "You Spin Me" is one of my favorite songs! I love Dead or Alive :)

Weird. Real Groovy Record Store on Queen St here in Tamaki (Auckland) in Aotearoa (NZ) also had 'Record Store Day' as well, and it was publicised on the radio.

I thought it was a NZ thing. Guess not.

I love my vinyl. After years of listening to the digital music exclusively I bought a nice turntable and new needles for it and some brand new vinyl. I couldn't believe the difference in the sound quality of vinyl compared to digital. Digital is convenient but vinyl is the best experience hands down.

And I might add that record store day was founded by Maine's very own Bull Moose Music! And no I don't work for them nor am I associated with the company in any way. Just love that Independent Maine spirit :-)
