Make Hayes While the Sun Shines

Matt Bomer: Waiting for the Q train?

It's a very open secret that "White Collar" hunk Matt Bomer is gay. Nonetheless, I see in my just-arrived copy of Details that he took the avoid-but-don't-deny approach when asked about the rumors about his sexuality.

"I don't care about that at all. I'm completely happy and fulfilled in my personal life," he said. "I have a network and a show riding on my shoulders. I would say a big difference between my character and me is that I can be too trusting. And I've realized in this business, that's not necessarily the smartest thing to be. I definitely have a thing or two to learn from the con artists."

I'm cool with this and so far, it seems the MSM hasn't gone out of its way to "expose" him. Sure, it'd be great if this handsome, rising star came out and added more positive visibility to our "team." (Ditto for Anderson Cooper.) But with no denial and no hypocrisy, I say let him do what's right for him at this stage in his life. Still, I can't help but wonder if his "straight-acting" persona -- which the documentary "The Butch Factor" deals with -- doesn't (unfairly) buy him more leeway from his fellow gays. I can still recall so many queers being disgusted by Sean Hayes' evasiveness about his sexuality, as if his playing a flamer (and being gay in real life) obligated him to come out and speak on behalf of gay causes. Again, it would have been great if he had. But just because he "wasn't fooling anyone," didn't he have just as much right to be coy as any other nonhypocrite?
