How Is THIS Protecting Families?

A child-custody between a mother and a transman father in Brooklyn is getting ugly, with the woman employing the same homophobic legal arguments Martina Navratilova recently used to try to get things her way after a judge agreed that the boy's father had the right to seek permanent custody. The couple had previously falsified a marriage license claiming the transition man was legally male. "When the judge gave him standing to sue for custody, I thought, 'What's happening? She voided the marriage, she knows he is a woman.' It's ludicrous," the boy's mother told the Daily News.

While it's despicable for her to do and say these things, to me -- as in the Martina case -- it just reiterates why we need marriage equality for everyone.

"The lack of a [same-sex marriage] law leads to confusion for many couples," said Cathy Marino-Thomas of Marriage Equity New York. "There's no doubt this case, no matter which side ultimately wins, will be appealed."

Separations will still be painful and children will still be hurt. But at least courts will have guidelines to follow so that our cases can be handled in a way that is equitable with our straight peers.
