Don't Cry for Him, Argentina

There were lots of tears of joy, relief and disbelief following Juan Martin del Potro's highly impressive come-from-behind five-set victory over Roger Federer last night in the final of the U.S. Open. (Even Roger teared up -- only this time he wasn't feeling sorry for himself, he was so overcome by the moment of the 20-year-old Argentine's first Grand Slam victory.) All I can say about del Potro is WOW! That flat forehand is a thing of beauty. He really earned this one. I'm happy Roger has the all-time majors record now because I can finally relax and root for a good match instead of making myself miserable if he loses. That said, I can't help but wonder if my waning interest in the game won't only get worse now that my Fed passion is tapering off. (Once Steffi was gone the women's game died for me.) Besides his breaking the majors record, part of it stems from his increasingly arrogant (and cranky) behavior. I talk about how much I hate Pete Sampras but when I really think back, I actually used to admire him quite a bit until he got so cocky and never gave anyone else any credit. Roger was very gracious in this loss (well, when he wasn't pointing out how BIG it was that Juan Martin had beaten HIM, the GREAT CHAMPION that he is!), so I don't think I will turn on him the way I did with that balding ape. But it will take something really special to replace a Roger (or Steffi) in my heart. A love like that don't come knocking every day. ...

You will learn to love Latinos. So much more passionate than the Swiss.

Ha! I lived with a Colombian for five years. That was more than enough "passion" for one lifetime!!!

I had one BF born in Paris for 3 years, and one born in Caracas for another 4. I'll take South America over Europe anyday.
Thanks for entertaining an ex-pat from W 20th, now in Portland, OR.

My mom got irritated when Roger kept on tooting his own horn about his record in the US Open and whatever. Oh shut up, and whoever was the MC, give the kid a break. He just won his first major and you were giving Roger more time to speechify than the recently crowned winner.
