Sweet Homo Alabama?

Some exciting news: I'm heading to Birmingham, Ala., later in the week to meet up with my childhood pal Greg to attend the Davis Cup tie between the United States and Switzerland. This trip has been in the works for quite a long time now, but was only shored up in recent weeks. It started out as a total dream when it was announced that Andy Roddick would be playing for the U.S. and Roger Federer would represent Switzerland. But then the former No. 1 recently wimped out citing "back problems" (when did Fed turn into Pete Sampras, King of Excuses? the only thing missing now is severe hair loss). Nonetheless, we still have Andy, James Blake, the Bryan brothers and Stanislas Wawrinka to look forward to -- plus I haven't seen Greg in nearly 10 years! -- so I'm still totally psyched.
I've never really been to the Deep South before (Asheville hardly counts), so I'm curious to see what it's like. Would love to hear from people in the area with recommendations for restaurants, bars and other activities. We're there four days and three nights and while tennis will occupy much of our time, I have a feeling we'll have a chance to explore the city a bit. Let me know what you think ...

I'm pissed that Roger dropped out of the Davis Cup tie I'm attending, but his new Nike commercial is so cool that I'm almost ready to forgive him

What types of things would you like to see/do in Bham?

I can't help too much with Birmingham, but Atlanta I sure can. I've lived in Midtown/Downtown for the past 5 1/2 years. It's just a little less than 2 hours away but with A LOT more to do.

I'm with you, Thomas. Come on through Atlanta, and there'll be plenty to do. We might even take you to Blake's. No offense, Birmingham.

Actually, Birmingham can be as much fun as Atlanta - with no attitude. You're going to love it.

You should check out Vulcan Park (A statue of the God mooning the city) Great view of town.

Civil Rights institute is pretty nice as well, and Sloss Furnaces gives a historical look at when Birmingham was the "Pittsburg of the South"

For eating there are some great BBQ joints, Jim and Nicks, Golden Rule, Dreamland.

Local famous chefs own Highlands Bar and Grill, Hot and Hot...both are pretty good.

The Wine Loft downtown is a cool spot for cocktails, as well as The Speak Easy across the street from the historic Alabama Theater.
