Designer Romance

On Saturday, Michael and I went to see the documentary "Valentino: The Last Emperor," about the famed fashion designer. Director Matt Tynauer was on hand at the Film Forum to introduce the film, and it was every bit as smart, colorful and entertaining as he seems to be. As many of you know, fashion is not my thing. I know nothing about it, can barely dress myself in the morning afternoon, and HATE shopping. But despite all this, it's the creative minds behind the clothes -- just like the great writers, filmmakers and actors behind their respective works -- that I do find captivating. Valentino Garavani is no exception.

The film follows the quixotic designer through the final two years of his legendary career leading up to his 45th anniversary gala and his fall 2007 retirement. The voyeuristic look at his life of wealth and glamour -- how many of you have Joan Collins, Gwyneth Paltrow and a handful of royals over for dinner on the same night? -- and the footage of fashion shows, fittings and temper tantrums -- all peppered with Valentino's priceless wit -- will delight you. But it's the stark look at the designer's relationship with his long-suffering partner, Giancarlo Giammetti, that will choke you up. They may have known they were being followed by a camera crew, but not even the best actors in the world could disguise the unique emotional bond between these two men.
