Berliners turned out on Thursday to say their goodbyes to historic Tempelhof Airport, the famed site of the Berlin airlift of 1948 and 1949, after the Soviets blocked land access to the city. The United States and Britain brought in supplies by air, over 2 million tons of food, fuel and even machinery. I flew in to Berlin (via Brussels) in May and made sure I landed there because I knew it wouldn't be around much longer. It's really a great airport because of it's architecture and location. But the 30 or so passengers on my flight were the only ones in the whole terminal and baggage claim is archaic at best. Glad I had the experience.
