Loose Cannon Alert

Barack Obama picked the equally "clean" and too" articulate" Joe Biden to be his running mate, but will it do him any good? For the record, I LOVE Biden. But I'm not sure how much of an agent for "change" this ultimate Beltway insider is. AND even if you think he brings a nice balance of "experience" to Obama's new politics agenda, with polls being as close as they are, can we afford Biden to go "off message" -- which is arguably what he does best -- even once?

Biden is a poor choice for Obama overall (though he certainly has more experience and gravitas). There is little electoral college upside (does Delaware have more than 1 vote?) and lots of downside (his tongue being one as you correctly pointed out). Given the recent overall polls and the Electoral College map, it really looks as this is McCain's race to lose. GP

It seems the general consensus regarding Obama's campaign has been that he hasn't been angry enough, that he hasn't appealed to the anger that a majority of Americans have toward the current administration.

Biden will certainly bring that anger to the campaign, not in a "negative" or "attacking" way but rather in a "sick and tired", "fed up" way.

Yes, Biden was wrong to use those words to describe Obama. So what? He's not racist. Check the HRC reports- he's one of the most liberal Senators when it comes to civil rights. How many times have we heard Bush make a gaffe? So many that it's expected now.
And yes, Biden is a loose cannon. But, how many years passed before a Democrat spoke out against Bush's policies? So many that I was losing hope that the Democratic Party was a viable option. Biden was one of the very few voices in the dark at the time and his oratal rhetoric (forgive my spelling) this election will electrify the Democratic base.
Will Obama lose votes from blacks and minorities for choosing Biden? No- Obama is black, no minority is going to pass on voting him to the office.
Will Republicans cower when Biden faces Romney in a vice presidential debate? You bet.
I wasn't all that enthusiastic about Obama before, but he DEFINETLY has my vote now.

At first I yawned at the prospect of VP Biden, mainly because a Washington insider doesn't seem to be the right fit for a candidate fighting for change. But the more I think it out, the more persuaded I am that Biden is the best choice available. As one reader has already pointed out, Obama now most needs a voice that can push back against McCain's crazy attack ads without leaving Obama looking just as sleazy. Biden will be that attack dog. His debating skills were never better than during the past primary season, and that's why I'm not concerned about the occasional gaffe. When the overall delivery is very sharp, people will overlook the mis-steps. (If anything, I'd worry that the Republicans would paint him as being too slick.) He'll handly eviscerate Romney in a debate, that's for sure. And the presidency was never won or lost on the strength of the home state of a VP candidate. I think it's a safe choice by a candidate who knew that he needed to make a safe choice, so it bolsters my confidence in Obama's judgment as well.

I woke up this am to see the text message that Obama picked Joe Biden for his VP pick and the first thing I did was go back to bed. This was the most lackluster, unexciting, predictable pick imaginable. Don't get me wrong, Joe Biden is smart as a whip, has a great voting record, and is fair on GLBT causes overall but for a campaign that is based on change and hope, I now feel neither.

This is one life-long liberal who has never been less excited about an election in my entire voting life.

I love both these guys, but I'm pretty sure Biden called him Barack America during his speech. Either he's really patriotic, or that's a bad sign...

I was a little excited when Hillary was running, since I've always felt she was educated enough to actually be able to weigh issues on their merits. But, unfortunately, we have a modern version of a hippie singing "change." He's, basically, equivalent to a Baptist minister. Able to deliver a wonderful speech with no substance and influence a gathering of people like a cult leader. And, now he has a loose cannon for a running mate. So, I think I'll be voting for the Libertarian candidate. At least that party is pro-gay and pushes for lower government spending and no corporate welfare. I just don't think I could vote for either Obama or McCain. Voting for one of them would be like voting for a vapid Brittany Spears clone or my grandfather, who has Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.

Was a woman ever seriously considered? I doubt it. I dunno, this and the basketball playing just smacks of the Old Boys Club. So he learned golf to play along, big deal.

Of course, the media pundits (Olbermann, Cafferty, Gergen) are chief assailants of the nations misogynist tendencies. What is it about straight men and their need to dominate?

I Love me the Biden. Okay what is it with the rest of you? First, Ripnstrip, the Libertarian Candidate is Bob Barr, former Congressman from Georgia, his voting record is very anti-gay rights, if you are concerned about gay rights at all you will not vote for Bob Barr! Joe Biden will bring in a lot of working class voters, those are his people, he relates well with them (having grown up working class in Scanton Pa). Loose Cannon shmannon, I have always liked the fact that he tells you what he thinks, I just wish he would only do it once, not over and over. You fall in Love in the Primaries, Now it is time to FALL IN LINE. This Country can not take 4 more years of Republican rule, make no mistakes, John McCain as President would finish the destruction how this country started by George W Bush. We must elect Barack Obama or kiss the country we Love goodby because it will be something else not so nice.

Biden has been in DC for 35 years...who's he fed up with, himself?

Biden's a great choice. Sure, he could've chosen Clinton, but I don't think she seriously wanted it and her tactics were beyond the pale if she ever truly wanted to cozy up to him in the event of his win. Other than her, I feel all the same people whining about Biden would have been whining about Sebelius or Bayh ("who are they??? nobody cares!!!" etc.)

I'm not sure I understand why any liberal would not be thrilled with Obama...he's as liberal as they come in the Senate, as liberal as or more liberal than John Kerry. Certainly more liberal than Bill Clinton.

I guess there is a useless, mind-numbed "backlash" against all the positive vibes surrounding Obama. Hopefully, left-leaners will get over it and realize we have a dynamic candidate with big plans who will be working with 2 Democratic Houses (2 not 7, John...)...and as a bonus, he is the candidate who will not be Crazy John McCain once in office.

And Libertarians are just assholes in my experience; they're just Republicans who want to have a special name. :0)~

Biden helps not only in Delaware but also in MN where he has roots. He'll trash the GOP VP in the debate. It was a good pick even if he is gaffe prone. I'm sure Obama has taken that into consideration.
