  • Vote for Slim: A mailer from a Texas Republican congressional candidate's campaign contains a photo of his head attached to an image of a different body that makes him look thinner. (Is Janice Minn running his campaign?) Former Sugar Land Mayor Dean Hrbacek's campaign manager Scott Broschart acknowledged to The Houston Chronicle that the image is a fake, but said Hrbacek has been so busy that he had no time to pose for a full-length photo for the mailing "He may appreciate that we took a few pounds off him," Broschart said. "I think the voters ... are more concerned with the issues as opposed to pretty photo shoots." Yeah. That's it. (AP)

  • Sex Crime: Thirty years after director Roman Polanski fled the United States and a conviction for unlawful sex with a minor, a U.S. filmmaker has reopened the sensational case in a documentary that is shaking up the Sundance Film Festival. • Rapist Sentenced: A man convicted this week of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old boy at gunpoint was sentenced to 99 years in prison Thursday after he apologized for that attack and the rapes of four other young men. In a written statement read in court, Keith Hill also said he decided to assault men rather than women because "it would be less hard on them." Hill, 20, was convicted Tuesday of assaulting one of five young men he had confessed to raping during an eight-month spree in 2006 in Baytown, Texas. Hill described feeling conflicted even as he committed the crimes, saying he pistol-whipped two of his victims after orally raping them because he was "upset at them for doing what I told them to do." What a sick piece of trash. With a blame-the-victim stance like that I'm surprised he didn't go into politics. (AP)

  • From Steppenwolf to Broadway: Be sure to check out this adorable audio slide show of Laurie Metcalf -- in New York starring opposite Nathan Lane in David Mamet's "November" -- in which she talks about the good old days of performing with the Steppenwolf Theater Company. including this shot of her with Francis Guiman in the 1981 production of "Balm in Gilead" (NYT)

And why did Keith Hill only pick Caucasian men to assault? What weird psychology was going on there? Or is that just his "taste"?
