Quote of the Year

"The checkout clerk then started to grill me about why I didn't want to, and I honestly think she handled my bananas more roughly than they usually do."-- Jack Siegel, a tax lawyer and charity governance expert, talking about the time he told a Whole Foods cashier that he wasn't interested in rounding his total up as a donation for breast cancer charity. I think it's nice that corporations decide to pony up for charities, but there should be zero pressure on the consumer. I always say no because I make any charitable donations I intend to make myself, and while my bananas have never been woman-handled, I've definitely gotten a few looks that said "Yuppie tightwad."
