Page 1 Consider (09/13)

  • A League of Her Own: A leaked copy of Rosie O'Donnell's "Celebrity Detox" reveals that our favorite lesbian used to break her own limbs with a baseball bat. (Ouch.) Too bad she didn't try that on Elisabeth Hasselback. (Insider)

  • Gimme More: "I opposed the war in 2002. I opposed it in 2003. I opposed it in 2004. I opposed it in 2005. I opposed it in 2006." That Senator Barack Obama saying the same thing over and over and over. I also opposed the war from Day One but that doesn't qualify me to be president. I wanna love ya, but do you have anything else? (NYT)

  • Low Lights: I love how the Catholic Church is much harder on priests who finger the cash than on the ones who fingers the kiddies. The Rev. Michael Jude Fay, a Roman Catholic priest with a taste for high living, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to federal charges of defrauding his parishioners of nearly $1 million from 1999 to 2006, when he was forced to resign. Next stop? The slammer. He used the money to get his hair frosted -- would Jesus really disapprove? (NYT)

  • Transgression: Jenna Jameson and Amanda Lepore walked the catwalk for Heatherette on Tuesday. Help me out here -- which one is the transsexual? (GossipGirls)

  • Pork Belly Politics: A sometime GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate in Iowa is looking to impeach the district court judge who last month struck down Iowa's ban on same-sex marriage. Hog farmer Bill Salier and the group he cofounded, Everyday America, this week launched online petitions asking the Iowa legislature to impeach Polk County judge Robert Hanson, who Salier says violated the state constitution in his Aug. 30 ruling. (Advocate)

  • Fresh Start? Condemned fabulist James Frey is back with another a new book of fiction. I never read "A Million Little Pieces" but having descended from a long line of exaggerators I always thought he got a bit of a raw deal. Is the public ready to forgive? (NYT)

  • Making Progress: An Albany court has dismissed a challenge to a decision by New York state's comptroller that treats out-of-state marriages of same-sex couples the same as any other legal marriage in terms of benefits afforded to state employees through the New York State Retirement System. (365Gay)

  • Father Fumble: It's just now occurring to Tom Brady that having a kid with his ex-girlfriend isn't ideal? (People)

  • Celebrity Justice? It's been three days and there's still no verdict in the Phil Spector murder trial in Los Angeles. Don't tell me it's happening all over again. (AP)

Oprah was ultimately short sighted and overwrought in her public condemnation of Mr. Frey. I believe if she were to investigate any memoirist like Augsten Boroughs, whom I love, for example, she would find that much in his story was an embelishment if not an outright fabrication. Writers do this, it is what makes their writing more interesting. In the final analysis, memoirs are stories
