Life on the D-VR List: Do not forget to set your recorder to tape Kathy Griffin's new standup special, "Everybody Can Suck It," followed by the premiere of Season Three of "My Life on the D-List" tonight on Bravo. I'm mean honestly: if you miss these shows tonight, what are the chances that Bravo will air them again? (Bravo)
Sparks Fly: An anti-obesity campaigner who criticized "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks' weight has received death threats over her remarks. MeMe Roth, of the National Action Against Obesity, admits she has been the victim of hate-mail ever since her appearance on a TV show, with fans of the star "calling for my death." But Roth refuses to retract her opinions, and insists 17-year-old Sparks is in need of severe weight loss. "When I look at Jordin I see diabetes, I see heart disease, I see high cholesterol. That's what's so sad about this -- she is not the vision of health -- she is the vision of 'unhealth'. Her extra weight is a reflection of today's society and a culture where many of our children have compromised health due to unhealthful food choices and inactivity ... We have to stop with the 'baby fat,' 'curvy,' 'goddess' euphemisms and own this child health crisis." (FemaleFirst)
Return to Oz: Former funnyman Jim Carrey will star in "I Love You Phillip Morris," a dark comedy about a conman whose love for a cellmate leads him to make several prison escapes. Based on a book by Houston Chronicle crime reporter Steve McVicker, the fact-based film casts Carrey as Steven Russell, a married father whose exploits landed him in the Texas criminal justice system. He fell madly in love with his cellmate, who eventually was set free, which led Russell to escape from Texas prisons four times. Script has some of the dark edges of "Bad Santa" but is grounded by the affable and lovesick character of Russell. Project was pitched to financiers as "Catch Me if You Can" meets "Brokeback Mountain." This film sounds fascinating and the only way it would sound better would be if Jim Carrey's weren't involved ... (Variety)
Father-in-Law Knows Best? As predicted, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating what role, if any, a staff scientist played in the international health scare set off by the odyssey of his son-in-law, who has extremely drug-resistant tuberculosis. The scientist, Robert Cooksey, is a microbiologist who works with tuberculosis and other organisms at the federal diseases agency in Atlanta. Cooksey said he had given his daughter’s fiance, Andrew Speaker, "fatherly advice" about traveling to Greece for his wedding and honeymoon in Europe in May -- but given his profession many have questioned just how fatherly the advice was. Moore Than He Can Handle: Sexy "Criminal Minds" star Shemar Moore is due in court later this month after being booked for investigation of driving under the influence, authorities say. Moore, who was released on $5,000 bail, was doing over 65 mph on Santa Monica Boulevard around 1 a.m. Friday when he was stopped by the California Highway Patrol, officers said. (AP)
Marriage of Convenience: The head of the St. Louis office of the Missouri public defender's office has been arrested for allegedly arranging a sham marriage to keep his foreign gay partner in the country. Eric Affholter, 40, is charged with conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, a federal offense. His partner, Pedro Cerna-Rojas, 31, a native of Peru, also was indicted but has not been found. Federal authorities believe Cerna-Rojas may have fled the country. The woman who married Cerna-Rojas, Collette Lewis, was an assistant public defender working under Affholter. She also has resigned but has not been charged with any offense. Why does this sound a lot more interesting -- and even funnier -- than "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry," who lousy trailer we saw over the weekend? (Source)
Police Probe: Lithuanian police have launched a criminal investigation into hate messages advocating violence against gays. Good thinking. (Source)
Laguna Beach: Now it's Brad Pitt and George Clooney's fault that the Boom Boom Room is closing? I love that place as much as anyone -- I celebrated my 23rd birthday there back in 1990 -- but if the clientele has ceased to exist, how much longer can you force something that just isn't there? iTunes has tonight's episode of 'Kathy Griffin: Life on the D-List' available for free right now... it's a brilliantly produced episode.
I couldn't agree with you more about the Boom Boom Room. Even on big party weekends in Laguna, they still can't get the gays in that place. Time to let it go...
I was always wondering how she mentions the "names" of people and nothing happens like getting sued...so it was interesting to me to find out that she ain't a stupid dame...she's got plenty of legal backup..you go Kathy!!
