TV Preview: 'Be Real'

Had the chance to see an advance screening of "Be Real," LOGO's latest offering, described as a reality series examining extraordinary LGBT Americans at pivotal moments in their lives. What a treat it was. Really more of a standard documentary, Episode One centers on the adorable Calvin, whose struggles with his race and sexuality brought him to the verge of suicide on the Golden Gate Bridge. Today, we see Calvin flourishing as the head of a food bank for the needy, as well as a popular member of the Gay Men's Chorus in San Francisco. We also meet the brave and articulate Christine, a breast cancer survivor who channels her background as a therapist and photographer into taking provocative picture of other women suffering breast cancer.

The series premieres next Monday, May 14 at 10 p.m. ET. As much as I love shows about beautiful young people, I have to say it's nice to see real people who are doing something productive with their lives on television once in a while. If Episode One is any indication, I like where this show is going.
