Mixed Messages

If Tyra Banks is really so proud of being a fat-ass heavier than she was before, then why is she going around rapidly losing 30 pounds and selling off the photos to prove it? Remember what she told People earlier this year? "I love my mama, and she has helped me to be a strong woman so I can overcome these kinds of attacks, but if I had a lower self-esteem, I would probably be starving myself right now. That's exactly what is happening to other women all over this country." (It is? Has she looked around lately?) I've never understood people like her and Star Jones, Ricki Lake and Carnie Wilson (and so on) who like to yammer on and on about how great they think they look with extra poundage (fine, there's no crime in being overweight. but who are they trying to convince anyway?). Nobody WANTS to be overweight and NOBODY looks better overweight. It's OK to not want to be overweight! It's not just YOU! Why do you think this is only about YOU?) and then suddenly -- BAM! -- the crash diet slash stomach-stapling surgery kicks in. How about just trying to live your life doing everything in moderation. You don't have to be a waif and you don't have to be a whale. Sounds like a bunch of narcissistic hypocrites trying to have their (publicity) cake (and not) eat it too.

And need I remind you of this embarrassing display?

I think "You don't have to be a waif and you don't have to be a whale." should replace "There Goes the Electronic Neighborhood!" LOLOL!!!

Well, to be honest I don't blame Tyra or that ilk per se - I blame a society that is obesessed with physical "perfection" - your blog celebrates it, my blog celebrates it, and a million other people and things celebrate it - perhaps indirectly, but even so. Thus, the pressure mounts on all to be flawless, or as close to it as we can possibly be (no matter the cost). And, if we can't be physically perfect, then we strive to be wealthy...and the chase goes on...ad infinitum.

I agree with you. If someone wants to be fat - good for them - but do not condemn people who wants to be skinny.
