The Great Clay Divide

It's pretty amazing how sure the experts are that Roger Federer is the greatest player of all time, yet the clay court dilemma haunts him just as it did his closest competitor, Mr. Pete Sampras. Martina Navratilova, a serve and volleyer, was able to win the French Open, twice, but the women's game doesn't have the same depth as the men's (it was much more that way when she won in the '80s), so there is still hope. And truthfully, Roger's situation is about the only thing that makes men's tennis somewhat compelling anymore -- will Roger ever get this monkey off his back? -- and even this isn't enough to sustain interest year-round.
