Page 1 Consider (03/12)

  • So Wrong: It's not like all crimes aren't heinous in different ways, but where is there a shred of human decency when elderly women are targeted? (Source)

  • The Last Laugh: It used to be coming out of the closet was like endorsement suicide for professional athletes (see early '80s Billie Jean King, Martina Navratillova). But things are looking up. Recently out former basketball star John Amaechi has just inked a deal with HeadBlade (suck on that, Tim Hardaway), and he's not the only gay athlete hawking products these days. (NYT)
  • Bad Call: Speaking of which, how would you feel if you were a gay professional football player and you saw that Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy has agreed to be honored at a fundraising banquet for a group backing a proposed ban on same-sex marriage? What kind of message does that send to athletes -- gay or straight? Is it any wonder that professional athletes don't come out until after they've retired? (AP)
  • Not Pretty: Maybe I should be watching VH1's fake reality show "The Agency." Here's what the agent Becky Southwick had to say to a statuesque strawberry blonde on a recent episode: "You’re like the Pillsbury doughboy,"she explained, grabbing at the aspiring model’s soft midsection. "You've gotten fatter and yes, I said the f-word." Ouch. (NYT)

  • Lucky Loser: King Roger Federer's winning streak came to a surprise ending yesterday in Indian Wells, Calif. Guillermo Canas, a 29-year-old clay-court specialist who has been out of the game for the past year because of steroid violations, took out the world number one in straight sets, ending Federer's winning streak at 41. Canas had already lost in the tournament's final round of qualifying but was admitted into the main draw when someone withdrew. (Ticker)
  • Bad Policy: Besides weakening the U.S. military, destroying lives and being morally wrong, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" has also reared its ugly head elsewhere: in the courtroom. As investigators pursued an Air Force officer they suspected of drugging and raping other servicemen, how could they force men to testify when the 1993 law prohibits the military from asking about the sex lives of its members but requires the discharge of those who acknowledge being gay. (AP)

  • Closing Time: The legendary nightclub the Roxy held its last gay Saturday night over the weekend. In, fact, the club stayed open until noon Sunday, and all told, took in close to 4,000 people. The final D.J., Peter Rauhofer, played a remix of Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” twice. (NYT)
  • Gayborhoods: Gay villages are disappearing from major U.S. cities. (Tell me something I don't know.) (AP)
  • Native New Yorker? I always thought a native New Yorker was someone from New York City. Now I see the New York Times has a correction in today's paper that says it was wrong for calling Theodore Roosevelt the last born-and-bred New Yorker to make it to the White House because his distant relative, Franklin D. Roosevelt, was born and raised in Hyde Park, N.Y. Someone start drafting the correction of the correction, no? (NYT)
