Page 1 Consider (03/07)

  • Honk If You Hate Pedophiles: I'm all for protecting children from sex offenders, but proposed legislation in Ohio that requires child predators to place fluorescent green license plates on their cars is wrong in so many ways. That this is a revised bill because the original plan -- to have pink plates -- was deemed "too harsh" (HUH???) and offended breast cancer advocates and Mary Kay Cosmetics reps(!) gives you a little insight to how ridiculous this is. The penal system needs to figure out a more effective way to deal with offenders after they've served their time, but the fact that there's no research that suggests that doing something like this would do any good at protecting kids, not to mention the unnecessary invitation for vigilantes to go to work and the practical effects for family members using a car with these plates on it, are just a few of the reasons why this plan needs to be rethought . Surely the people of Ohio can do better than this. Suddenly the Scarlett letter seems quaint. (NYT)

  • A Is for Allegory: Kudos to Jenna Bush for writing a book for young adults about a 17-year-old HIV-positive unwed mother. Clearly this is a story about what happens when girls follow Jenna's dad's policies and shun condoms under all circumstances. (AP)

  • Bad Reputation: The Washington Post investigates something my mom, who is a bit of a suburban Nostradamus, has been predicting for the last few years: reputation-maligning via through online postings with offensive content and personal attacks that can be stored forever and are easily accessible through a Google search. I miss the good old days of writing Blank is a Whore on bathroom walls and forgetting about it. (WP)

  • The War at Home: Wow, this story really rips your heart out. (MSNBC)

  • Get a F**king Job (Or at Least a Hobby): The GOP is so bored these days that members in New Jersey decided to drum up a proposed constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage. Please make it stop. (365Gay)

  • Home Is Where the Hate Is: A federal appeals court ruled that just because you dress your hate speech up doesn't mean you can spew it anywhere you like. (365Gay)

  • R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Police issued arrest warrants Monday for two men accused of attacking members of an all-male singing group from Yale University. (Advocate)

  • When Trannies Attack: As companies pull ads from bitter tranny Ann Coulter's Web site, John Edwards has turned the incident into a fundraising opportunity. It's sad when "one of our own" lashes out, but always remember, Ann, there have been a lot of advances since your transition and facial feminization is still an option for you. (AP)

  • RIP: Ernest Gallo, 97, who with his brother Julio reaped riches from California grapes, shaping the drinking habits of a nation and creating a wine fortune from a small investment, died March 6 at his home in Modesto, Calif. May he rest in peace. Thanks for all the headaches. (WP)
