Pretty in Pink

I'm sad to report that my great-aunt Dorothy died on Saturday. She was one sweet lady. At 83, she was still e-mailing me regularly and scanning photos (on demand!) for my Flickr galleries. You can see her trusty computer behind her, in this photo taken on Mother's Day at her house in Annapolis in 2005. I never had a grandmother, but if I had I would've liked her to have been just like Dorothy. She lived a long and blessed life, so it would be unfair to be angry that she's gone now. But I'm sure gonna miss her.

When I was little kid, Dorothy worked for the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) on Capitol Hill. I can still remember visiting her at her office and thinking how glamorous it was that she worked in the nation's capital in a Cabinet-level agency (I knew it was important because it even had its own seal!). Years later, I ended up working nearby at the National Gallery of Art and would always think of that 1970s trip to Aunt Dorothy's office, pictured above. It's a memory that will stay with me always.

I so sorry to hear that she is gone. But the memories you have will live on as if she were still there. I'm facing that approaching event with my Mother who is 93. I don't have the joy of her e-mails and such. This is a woman that refuses to have an answering machine.

Thank you for honoring her in such a sweet way on your blog.

That's sad news, Kenneth. Thank you for sharing memories of your aunt with us. My grandpa recently died at age 101, and even though his passing brought much sadness, my family members and I shared many laughs together as we recalled moments from his long and colorful life.

My thoughts are with you.

it's great to see that you were close to her..and that's what's important...the grieving takes time and putting one foot in front of the other on a daily basis..then her memory becomes a comfort in times of need later on...you'll get there.....my condolences!

K! Blessed be. I want you to know that I've lit a beeswax candle, lit some sandalwood incense and placed out three lovely granny smith apples before my monitor as i've decided to have dorothy as my screensaver for the next seven days. I've sent her light, healing energies to assuage her journey to love-ons be safe, swift and filled with a joy that we here can even begin to fathom.

rest briefly for now, Dorothy, for soon you will rise, sing, soar and dance with your kindred spirits, angels...

I'm sorry about Great Aunt Dorothy. My condolences.

If it makes you feel any better, when I was on a cruise with my friend Jenn, she was reading through the daily newsletter and said outloud: "I know what a 'Friend of Bill W'. is, but what the hell is a 'Friend of Dorothy'?"

Now I can answer 'Kenneth in the (212) IS!', and it will mean TWO things.

Sending you a hug full of sympathy and love.

It appears to me that your aunt has moved To The Other Side. That is so WONDERFUL that you were able to share such great times with her in this life!

You will see her again!
