Tight End's Loose Lips

Did you hear about the ESPN college football announcer and former NFL tight end (huh-huh) Brian Kinchen who's been taken off the air for using the word "gay" as derogatory term during a game? In Saturday's telecast of the Northern Illinois-Iowa game on Saturday, Kinchen was explaining the need for receivers to make catches with their hands because they are "tender" and can "caress" the ball. He then paused and said, "that's kind of gay, but hey ..." (I'm surprised he didn't get a promotion for not chuckling when saying "receivers," but what do I know?)

Kinchen later apologized for his remarks. "They were completely inappropriate and not at all a reflection of who I am or the way I perform my work," Kinchen said in a statement issued by ESPN. "I have learned from my mistake and look forward to continuing my broadcasting career."

Kinchen's future as a "color" commentator with ESPNU, the cable network's college football channel, is still under review, Josh Krulewitz, ESPN's vice president of public relations told The Des Moines Register. (AP)

I'd like to hear his remark and his apology before commenting on his sincerity and sense of remorse. That said, I'm willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes we use a phrase or cliche because it is "in vogue" without realizing what we are really saying and how destructive language can really be. Let's hope he really learned something out of this.

You mean caressing balls isn't kinda gay? Hmmm... maybe I've been doing it wrong.

He also edhard shoulders (pads), chest and soft hands caressing the ball. What I heard was homoerotic and yes gay (hopefully). When ever you talk about young athletic males and use hard and soft in the same reference, well my mind tends to wonder.
