Nina

Nina having fun at the Phoenix Zoo circa Spring Break 1986, above.
Above, Nina checks out Kenny's record purchases in their room at the Gorham in Midtown Manhattan circa 1985. Below, Kenny and Nina (in my childhood living room) all dressed up for a big night on the town in Mesa, Arizona, circa 1986. And by big night I mean drinking a jug of wine in an apartment complex parking lot because we weren't old enough to get into bars.
So my friend Nina arrives from Chicago today. I'm so excited I can't even tell you. I met Nina my junior year of high school. I was visiting my friend Mark back in Michigan (having moved to Phoenix at the end of sixth grade) and she was one of his best friends there. Nina and I immediately hit it off -- she asked me if I loved "On the Road" and I asked her if she loved Paul Weller. 22 years later I still count her as one of my dearest friends. The middle photo is the two of us when we were 18 and came to New York City for the first time back in 1985 (Christmas time). My friend Greg and Terence came along too and we had the funnest time ever. I said then that I was going to move to New York some day -- and now eight years into my living here, Nina is finally coming to see the (212) version of me for the first time. (I usually go to Chicago to see her or we cross paths in our native Detroit.) Mark's arriving on Saturday for a complete reunion ... I'm really lucky to have such great friends. Hope your weekend is extra fun too.

Kenneth - hold your friends close, I just had to bury my best friend of 30 years this past weekend, and nothing will ever fill that void. We had been best friends since September of 1976!
