  • City Confidential: Somers, N.Y.: Yesterday, the family of Dr. Joseph Z. Kazigo, a surgeon at Nassau University Medical Center whose son Mulumba pleaded guilty last month to killing him came to court to draw attention to the abuse that they say the entire family suffered at patriarch's hands and to ask for compassion for the son. A friend of mine grew up near the Kazigo family and recalled seeing some odd things involving them, like the father conducting Army-like drills with the kids and making them run around the neighborhood. I don't doubt this family suffered (who likes to jog?), but in a civilized society I do not see how someone can premeditate murder, execute a murder, attempt to cover up a murder, and then lie about a murder -- and then only get convicted of manslaughter. There has to be an alternative to committing such a heinous crime. (NYT)
