It seems like it was just yesterday that I was writing about '70s bombshell Adrienne Barbeau's big return to the New York stage (oh, wait -- it was). Now I read that another '70s goddess -- Ali MacGraw -- will co-star in the Broadway production of "Festen," a hit London import about a pretty family with an ugly secret. The play begins previews Thursday at the Music Box Theatre. (Brenda's creepy brother Billy and ER's Julianna Margulies play her children.)
I remember being at my old job where the majority of the editors were in their 20s and I made some comment about Ali and Ryan O'Neal to which one of them replied, "Who?" It's hard to believe that two people could be such superstars -- truly the Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts of their day -- yet fade into relative obscurity quickly thereafter. Each of them even earned Oscar nods for their parts in "Love Story."
The former Mrs. Steve McQueen and Mrs. Robert Evans is 67 now and her "former model" good looks are still very much in check. Can a winning stage parts for Lynda Carter, Susan Anton and Lindsay Wagner be far behind?

Stories like this always FREAK ME OUT. Not only do they make me feel old, but they make me wonder why young people are so disconnected from the pop culture of the past! "Love Story" was a HUGE movie -- and it was before my time, too. But I grew up knowing about it, and also about Lauren Bacall and Errol Flynn and Gary Cooper and Betty Grable, and plenty of other actors/actresses who were WAY before my generation. (Granted, I'm gay, but still....)
So why are young people so out of touch that they don't know seminal movies from three or four decades ago???
I went to an Oscars party this year where one 20-something guy said he'd never heard of Joan Crawford.
Arghhh!
