'Shoes' Fetish

Just got home from a long (very wet) weekend in Miami Beach. It wasn't just the usual "it rains and then it stops" kind of Miami Beach. It rained and rained and rained some more! As a result, we ended up playing no tennis and seeing two movies on vacation (something we wouldn't normally do).

There wasn't really anything showing that we were dying to see, but "In Her Shoes" was showing as a sneak preview, so we just sort wound up buying tickets. Boy were we glad we did! We both were blown away by this one! Cameron Diaz is just wonderful and this script (based on Jennifer Weiner's novel) featuring Diaz as the sexy/ flighty/directionless younger sister to Toni Collette's dumpier, serious lawyer suits both leads very well. Shirley MacLaine turns in her best performance in ages by not playing her stock wisecracking old lady in this one, instead giving a sensitive, complex portrayal of a grandmother who has been devastated by the hand she's been dealt. I can't say enough good things about this one.

Funny thing: the one thing about the film that seemed a little off to me was that the gals are supposed to be sisters who are fairly close in age, yet Diaz really seems way (way) younger than Collette. However, I just discovered that Diaz is actually slightly older! Almost hard to believe. Apparently Toni Collette gained 25 pounds for the role. It really did age her nicely into the "older sister" role, almost too much.

We also found the time to see "Into the Blue." Although the movie was actually better than I expected (which isn't saying much), it was Paul Walker's visible butt crack that made the outing well worth the price of admission.

Toni Collette ROCKS!!! Ever since "Muriel's Wedding," I've tried to see as many of her movies as possible. (Even the deplorably stupid "Connie and Carla," in wich she was the only bright spot.) Glad to hear this one is worth the ticket.
