Song of the Day: 'Victim of Romance' by Michelle Phillips

The cover photo from Michelle Phillips's sole solo album -- taken by Mr. Faye Dunaway (aka Terry O'Neill) -- may be the thing most remembered about this 1977 release. But I do think "Victim of Love" exonerated Chynna's mom's thin-but-serviceable vocal abilities. (Anyone would seem feeble next to Mama Cass!) Producer Jack Nitzsche really outdid himself on the title track here, putting everything he learned from Phil Spector to good use. I've been on bit of a Mamas and the Papas kick lately -- I love how Michelle was a shameless Man Eater -- which led me to Mackenzie Phillips's disturbing autobiography. In it, she details her "consensual" sexual relationship with her father, Papa John, about which Michelle -- never one not to speak her mind -- had this to say: "Whether her relationship with her father is delusional or not, it is an unfortunate circumstance and very hurtful for our entire family. You should take with a grain of salt anything that's said by a person who has had a needle stuck in their arm for 35 years. The whole story is disgusting." Ouch!
