Showtime Pulls Plug on 'Web Therapy'

You can almost hear Dr. Fiona Wallice trying to talk her way out of this one

TV Line reports that Lisa Kudrow's "Web Therapy" will not be coming back for a fifth season. The show began as a Web series in 2008 -- about a self-absorbed therapist (of sorts) who decides that people can get everything they need out of a session in three minutes, so long as they avoid any feelings or emotions -- before being picked up by Showtime in 2010, with old episodes being fleshed out with additional footage. I'm a huge fan of Lisa's, but I'm good with this decision. Although the move to TV had its moments, the very nature of the Web-cam patient-therapist setting really lent itself better to a Web series -- that was virtually all you saw, with no exteriors or other scenes -- so it felt like they drained as much out of this "modality" as they could. Here's hoping this means Lisa will have more time to come up with another season of "The Comeback," which I hear HBO is more than open to.

Also sanguine about this, since a good but limited show actually got a longer lifespan than it probably would have (or even warranted) otherwise. I'm still working through the older episodes, but I've really enjoyed the understated, barebones nature of the series; with so little else going on, the dialogue -- which apparently incorporated a fair bit of improvisation -- and subtle visual cues had to be that much better for comic effect, and it often delivered. It was kind of a live-action Dr. Katz, which I also enjoyed even though I'm not much of an animation guy (and that featured a brilliantly acidic Laura Silverman, so there's your Comeback tie-in!), what with the dysfunctional therapist and staff and multitude of guest stars airing their idiosyncrasies. But yes, it had gone about as far as it could, with the clever, quirky premise becoming more of a straitjacket after all was said and done.

If nothing else, it let Lisa -- more typically presented as an offbeat, careless sort of pretty -- glam out with some stunning wardrobe, accessories and make-up to go with the self-consciously posh, vain persona of Fiona. I certainly gayed out to that!

Oh well. I've seen a few episodes, it's pretty cool.
