Song of the Day: 'Weak in the Presence of Beauty' by Alison Moyet

Was on a Yaz(oo) bender over the weekend. The duo's two albums have been in my music collection since their release, but just began reading up on their troubled history. For one thing, I didn't realize both LPs had slightly different lineups in American than elsewhere -- "Situation" was a b-side that became their biggest U.S. (released completely against the band's wishes), with the song "Tuesday" was on the original U.K. version, and "State Farm" was a b-side (and American crowd pleaser) was swapped in on the second album in place of "Happy People," a song Alison Moyet refused to sing so Vince did (he doesn't sound that much different from her -- sorry, Vince!). When Larry threatened to claw me if I played either album again, I switched to some Alison solo cuts. I don't have all of her albums -- my friend Greg did back in the day, so being young and poor in high school I would just listen to them at his house and may have taped them -- and I know they're way slicker and less interesting than Yaz(oo) music. Still, there isn't a song bad enough to make listening to this woman voice anything but pure joy. Yes, I get weak in the presence of (vocal) beauty.
