Postcard From Detroit

Having a great time in Michigan, seeing lots of old friends and visiting old haunts. Have some fun stories to share later, but what's been most educational is that I am in charge of navigating for the first time in my life here. We had moved to Phoenix by the time I learned to drive -- and my summer visits were spent in the passenger's seat of my friend Mark's Volare controlling the tape deck en route to Todd's and Backstreet -- so it's the first I realized where my little stratosphere of Beaumont Hospital, Oakland Mall, Village Racquet Club and the Ram's Horn restaurant was in relation to the rest of the world! (EAST 13 Mile runs east-west -- who'd have thunk?!!!) have a good weekend -- off to a graduation party for a friend and a friend's son!

With the Medlins, who shared a duplex with my mom and dad in Ferndale in the early '60s

Page Middle School, where I met my best friend Mark

With Michael at Pronto in Royal Oak, which was a bland suburb when I was born there but has since become Detroit's most fashionable area, as well as a gay hot spot

Outside the Royal Oak Music Theatre, where I saw Thompson Twins, REM and the dB's in the early '80s

My fave late-night restaurant, just down the street from the townhouse we moved into when my mom remarried and had my sister

Willow Hill Condominiums, which were actually town houses

Tawas Court, the house that seemed so "high" when I was a kid

Welcome to the Motor City!
