Song of the Day: 'Sign of the Times' by the Belle Stars

Loved "Sign of the Times" when it came out in '83. But the Belle Stars were "Greg's group," so I never got to know them too much more than occasionally listening to their (sole) album at his house. I remember liking it fine, but thinking that it had too many campfire songs. My best friend and I had limited resources as teens, so he was responsible for buying some new acts and I was responsible for others. More often than not, they were girl bands. (He got the Flirts, I got the Catholic Girls.) In 1983, he bought "Madonna" and I bought "She's So Unusual," but it didn't take long before we realized they were both must-haves and raced out to get the other. When "Iko Iko" became a surprise hit for the Belle Stars when it appeared in "Rain Man," I meant to circle around back to them and buy their album for myself, but never did. But it's still the '80s in my house, so it probably won't be long before I do! P.S. My pal Taffy reminds me that "Madness," the b-side of "Sign of the Times," was quite delightful. (Greg had that, too.) Here's hoping that's been added to any CD reissues.

oh god- GREAT pic for song of the day! I loved this song (and almost equally loved the b-side, Madness) and played it frequently. the album is fine, but this is the highpoint. reminds me of a Dutch girl I dated at the time. stop laughing!

There's also a great 12" remix available on YouTube.

My favorite song of the Belle Stars was "80s Romance". Such sweet memories.
