Church of the Poison Mind

I guess it's "cool" that Tim Tebow has bowed to pressure and canceled his speech at a "controversial" Dallas church. But aren't all churches -- except Unitarians(!) -- in the business of discriminating against someone? I'd almost respect the quarterback more for going ahead and standing up for what he believes in, because I don't think this is a sign that his beliefs have changed, he's just doing damage control for Madison Avenue.

The great thing about this whole Tebow incident is that it got a lot of people who would have never otherwise heard of Jeffess reading and hearing about him and his brand of Christian Love®. When you stand up in front of thousands of people say things like the Roman Catholic faith represents “the genius of Satan” , that the Mormon religion is a “cult” that is “from the pit of Hell or that "Islam leads to pedophilia." Or in public interviews says gay people are in a "miserable lifestyle" and most have AIDS or giving equal rights to gay people will cause the "implosion of our society"...
Jeffress is an embarrassment to Dallas. Glad to see more people aware of how awful and hateful he really is (though his congregation is just as bigoted/hateful/racist/homophobic/antisemitic/anti-Muslim as he is.

I've been wondering the same thing since I heard Tebow cancelled. He was pretty vocal about his anti-gay stance in past years, and I was wondering what prompted this sudden bout of seeming tolerance. Personal growth would account for it except that there's been no mention of it before. Protecting his brand makes more sense, particularly at someone else's insistence.
