Song of the Day: 'Piece of My Heart' by Debbie Harry

I can remember being physically shaken the first time I saw Debbie Harry in "Intimate Stranger," the 1991 made-for-Showtime movie. I was so excited that she finally had the lead in something -- she was great in "Hairspray" and "Videodrome," but her parts were relatively small -- so this was her chance to finally shine. She had looked so beautiful just two years before when I saw her touring in support of "Deb, Dumb and Blonde." But as Cory Wheeler, the chain-smoking  phone-sex operator and bar singer, she suddenly looked every one of her 46 years, and then some. Perhaps this was to complement the role -- "Angel" hadn't had the easiest life -- or perhaps it was filmed days before her first face lift. But whatever the case was, I could barely watch. (Listening to her say the words "black panties" and "lace bra" with a cig hanging out of her crooked mouth didn't help.) What I had always hoped, though, was that the two songs she performed in the film -- Janice Joplin's signature "Piece of My Heart" and  the Young Rascals' "I Ain't Gonna Eat My Heart Out" -- would turn up in MP3 format somewhere on the Web. To date, this hasn't happened. But I noticed both scenes are now on YouTube. And though they're incomplete and include some dialogue, I was able to rip them into my iTunes library -- thus ensuring I will never have to view another minute of this film again, even as I realize at her age then that she doesn't really look that bad at all.
