This morning's Song of the Day is a bittersweet one: Gwen Guthrie's "Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But the Rent" came into my head last night and put a big smile on my face ... until I went to pull up a photo of the R&B star and learned that she had died in 1999 of uterine cancer. That's an awful shame -- she was just 48 -- but then it made me happy again to know that her legacy lives on in her music. I'm living proof!

I sing this song all the time and no one knows what the hell I'm doing. Glad I'm not the only one who remembers it!
The "Ultimate Collection" that Hip-O did for Gwen is well worth seeking out. In addition to 2 versions of her signature tune, it features the songs that made her Larry Levan's Queen Of The Paradise Garage and some of her reggae and ballad work, too. I recommend ALL of her albums up to and including "Good To Go Lover", but I'm biased. ;-)
I'm very sorry to have lost Gwen at so young an age but that is one of my favorite songs. Got to have J.O.B. I was in the Navy in GTMO and this song always brings me back to the more pleasant times I had on that island
