Michigan Pulls an Arizona

Wow. If my secondary home state isn't embarrassing me by outlawing ethnic-studies classes, then my birth state is joining the hate brigade by firing a middle school teacher for starting to organize a fundraiser for Trayvon Martin's family. She says when she was told by the superintendent that it was not appropriate, she attempted to call it off but was fired before she could even do so.

For her part, Superintendent Jacqueline Cassell -- who was quick to point out is "a child of the civil rights movement" -- said that she wanted students to focus on learning, not activism.

She added: "This is not the time in the school year” to distract students from academics.

A number of groups, such as the Southern Poverty Law Center, have called for Harris to be reinstated.

I'm not sure the teacher deserved to be fired, but I fully support the position that it was an inappropriate activity for the teacher to sponsor. It is a shame but the controversy surrounding this case makes raising money for the Martin family a political act, and school teachers should avoid involving other people's children in their politcal endeavors.

In a civics class? Really?

It's really important to pacify the extreme right, isn't it?
