Everybody's Number One

I know this trophy Roger Federer received at the Swiss Indoors yesterday in Basel is in recognition of the total amount of time he spent on top of the ATP computer rankings. But it does seem a bit odd that he's receiving it now that he's slipped out of the Top 3 for the first time in nearly a decade. (He's also two weeks shy of beating Pete Sampras' record for most weeks at No. 1, a record he's now extremely unlikely to break or even match.) Perhaps less surprising is the fact that he was voted "the best player to ever compete at the Swiss Indoors."(!) (I wonder if the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart and the Wells Fargo Open in San Diego are preparing to recognize Tracy Austin as "the best player to ever compete" there.) Roger may be the hometown favorite, but with Novak Djokovic making his return to tennis following his injury-plagued U.S. Open victory, even Fed's Swiss crown could be in jeopardy.

It was Halloween, so naturally the Djoker had a mask on when he came on the court
