Actually, that's the correct spelling -- the borough was named after the Bronck family, an old Dutch clan that owned much of the land up there. Bronx is a corruption of "Bronck's." Any questions?

Actually Marc, the Bronck family was from Sweden.

Actually, Zeke, there's some confusion about where the Broncks were from. A number of records indicate Jonas Bronck was originally from the Faroe Islands, which makes him Danish. But other evidence shows that he emigrated from Sweden. (Either way, I was wrong. He settled in the Dutch Colony of New Netherland, but he wasn't Dutch. My mistake -- thanks for pointing that out.)
