Depending on who you listen to, circumcision is either the best thing you can do to a boy, or the worst. Slicing off parts of a kid's genitals should be off-limits to even the best-intentioned parents... I mean, most states don't even allow minors to be tattooed!
My Jewish friends say I'm out of line, but I think protecting kids from permanent body modifications trumps the parents' religious views.
(every year, hundreds of Jehovah's Witness believers are forced by court order to obtain medical treatment for their children when the parents would otherwise allow the child to simply die, rather than get a transfusion.)
