Who Wears Short Shorts?

My brother and sister-in-law were just in town for the big Agassi-Sampras, McEnroe/Lendl showdown at Madison Square Garden. I had gone with them to the Federer-Sampras event a few years ago and found the fake "go-to-three-sets" bit a little too annoying, so I passed on this one. (I ended up checking it out on TV a bit.) I had dinner with Bill and Jacqueline after the match and it sounds like they had fun -- they saw a bunch of celebs, including Nancy Kerrigan, David Duchovny, Tea Leoni and Billie Jean King -- even if it was McEnroe ripping off his shorts to reveal his "look from 1985" that provoked Bill to text me, rather than the match itself. (Gloria Gaynor showing up out of nowhere to sing "I Will Survive" during the opening ceremonies also earned a text!) For the record, even though McEnroe retired with an ankle injury up 6-3 in a non-pro set (first-to-8 bullshit), don't think the hyper-competitive Pete Sampras was willing to give the audience any extra "show" for their money.

He routed his one-time "rival," 6-4, 7-5, although it was much less close than the score would indicate. (Think Larry with a bug on the floor, batting it around when the mood strikes him.) As much as the tennis world likes to lavish praise on Agassi, his virtual inability to beat Sampras in Grand Slam events is a huge black spot on his otherwise impressive resume. Something tells me if Sampras weren't so completely bland, a lot more of it would have been made of that fact, but you know how tennis likes to pretend it has rivalries!

Like Agassi did during his career, she will survive
