Justine Henin's Sorry Excuse

It was this incident with Serena Williams back in 2003 that soured me on Justine Henin -- and it's this blame-the-victim "contrition" about it nearly eight years later that will forever confirm that I made the right call.

Ah, toeing the American line on this one, huh? While the rest of the world rightly asked: If Serena saw Justine holding up her hand, why did she go ahead and serve? Either Serena saw the hand but chose to serve anyway (and please, no bunk about how she couldn't possibly have stopped her service motion--that one was soundly discredited by commentators), or she didn't see it before serving and then decided she might be able to finagle a do-over after netting the serve. And let's not forget that Serena nickname is not exactly "Sportsmanship." Sorry -- you hit a nerve, because I'm so frickin' sick of apologists for Serena Williams.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to say, Rog. No one is less of a fan of Serena Williams than me.

But Justine SAID: "I think she saw [the hand raising] and she was disturbed by that."

What Justine did -- stop the point by saying she wasn't ready -- requires a let, plain and simple. How can you even argue this?

But you've only confirmed my point. "She saw the hand raising..." and served anyway. Serena wanted it her way, either way. If her serve had been good, I can assure you she would not have wanted a replay. That's pure Williams gamesmanship. It was not Justine's responsibility to make the call, just as you can bet sure as hell Serena would not have.

@Rog: So you're saying it's impossible to be distracted by something at the same time as doing it?

Then why not flail your arms around EVERY TIME your opponent serves? According to you, it's perfectly OK and it would be YOUR fault if you "chose to serve anyway"!
