HIV-Positive Porn Star Told He Wouldn't Make Any Money if He Wore a Condom

Porn star Derrick Burts, who performs as “Derek Chambers” in gay films and “Cameron Reid” in straight, spoke publicly about his diagnosis for the first time Tuesday in an interview with The L.A. Times at the AIDS Healthcare Foundation offices in Hollywood. Although gay porn films typically require condom use and straight porn only relies on frequent testing, he still blames the gays for his HIV status, you know, because he and his porn star girlfriend are monogamous.

'I had never seen a condom on a straight set in my entire life... of 24 years.'

This particular guy aside...I think the demand by men (including gay men) for "fantasy" porn without condoms is barbaric. One comment at THE ADVOCATE said "I'll buy my porn underground if they make condoms mandatory. Figure out another way!" As if it wouldn't be easier and safer to figure out another way to get aroused and get off—like masturbating with your own imagination or, I don't know, having real sex! You know, YOU taking the risk. Instead, people don't care about the health of performers who are not engaging in a fantasy when they have unprotected sex. There is risk in everything, but people should not be told "I'll pay you if you take a risk that could very easily lead to a lifelong, incurable disease." Every industry has safeguards. What if bankers were told they could only be hired if they would allow an HR person to stick them with a needle found in the alley? Chances are, they won't get a disease...but.... Would people say, "Oh, well, there's risk in everything! They have the choice!" or would they demand that industry stop that practice?
